The Department of Defense can improve programs to reduce hearing loss among service members, said the Government Accountability Office (GAO) in a report released on January 31. It found that in 2009, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) spent more than $1.1 billion compensating 1.2 million claims for veterans with tinnitus or hearing loss injuries. In 2005, auditory impairments became the most common service-connected disability compensated by the VA (http://tiny.cc/8cpn3).
