To the Editor:—  I believe that you meant to use "hypothesize," "to adopt as a hypothesis." Hypothecate means, roughly, to pawn (Oxford Universal Dictionary). William Boyd made the same error in his Textbook of Pathology when I was a medical student (about 1933).
