The regulatory mechanism of the cell is currently receiving a great deal of attention—both in terms of understanding the mechanism and in an attempt to elucidate the results of malfunction of the system. Scientists studying both congenital malformations and neoplasia are particularly concerned with the cell's own control of protein synthesis. It is an area of investigation in which ground rules and working models are not yet available. Research centers around limited observations in a few cell systems— some normal—some malignant.
The 19th annual Symposium on Fundamental Cancer Research at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute in Houston presented current work in this area.
John R. Sadler, PhD, of the Department of Biophysics at the University of Colorado Medical School in Denver, reported his study of repressor activity in the biosynthesis of proteins. The living cell specifically controls its own production of enzymes, Sadler said,
