Two books on cytology have been published which should be of value to any clinician interested in gynecologic cytology. The Atlas is a well-written manual with superb plates. There is a good outline of normal gynecologic cytology. Approximately one third of the monograph is devoted to the effect of hormones on vaginal epithelial cells; concluding this section is the important and sometimes neglected limitation of cytologic hormonal evaluation: "The patterns one encounters in cytology practice... are usually not as distinct as those described." There is a beautifully illustrated chapter on cellular changes following irradiation. Abnormal and malignant gynecologic cytology is described too concisely, but many other texts are available on this subject.
