A type of experimental diabetes in rabbits, apparently triggered by insulin injections, has been observed for the first time by a group of investigators at the University of California.
Although careful to emphasize that the reaction occurred in response to exogenous insulin immunization, Wilfred E. Toreson, MD, said the "immune disease" involved inflammation and lymphocytic infiltration of the islets of Langerhans.
"This cellular, inflammatory response in the islets was seen before circulating antibody to the insulin could be detected," Dr. Toreson, of the Department of Pathology, reported to the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists. "Therefore, the inflammatory reaction probably represents a cellular antibody phenomenon, similar to other better known examples of delayed hypersensitivity."
It is possible, he suggested, that this type of immune mechanism might be related to certain cases of acute juvenile diabetes. "In some patients in whom the disease has been fatal, autopsy examination has shown inexplicable
