Iron sorbitex, a parenteral preparation for the treatment of iron-deficiency anemia, is given only by the intramuscular route. It should be used only in the patient with an established diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia, and only when an oral preparation cannot be used. Contraindications to its use include the presence of hemolytic anemia or any other condition in which iron cannot be properly used. Untoward effects are usually minor, but serious reactions have been observed.
