This publication makes readily available all the international nonproprietary names for drugs adopted by the World Health Organization from 1953 to 1961.
Nonproprietary names are given in both Latin and English versions and chemical compounds are identified by Chemical Abstracts index names, the latter through the efforts of Dr. Clarence T. Van Meter. Since the problem of providing trademarks at the international level is quite extensive, these are not given here and the usefulness of this publication is, to some degree, limited.
The method for adopting international nonproprietary names for drugs is outlined and the general principles for devising these names are also given.
This is a basic reference work in an area of increasing importance in international health, as it provides the bridge essential to improved dissemination of information on drugs.
