In 288 pages of occasionally clumsy English, a Dutch professor of social medicine discusses techniques of investigation of sociological and economic aspects of medical activities. The findings in 30 such projects are critically evaluated, with emphasis on method rather than conclusions, the latter being of primarily local significance.
