Few medical journals accept poems for publication, although sporadic poems appear in the New England Journal of Medicine, Western Journal of Medicine, Einstein Quarterly Journal of Biology and Medicine, andAnnals of Internal Medicine. Mediphors, "a literary journal of the health professions," began publication only a few years ago. On the back cover of Uncharted Lines, Dr Anne Hudson Jones writes, "JAMA led the way among medical journals in establishing a regular poetry and medicine column almost ten years ago." Indeed, the JAMA Poetry and Medicine column is valuable both as an outlet for writers and as an added "poetic" dimension to otherwise austere scientific material.
