Investigators from institutions in China and the United States have indentified a novel virus in patients with a life-threatening disease called severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS; Yu X-J et al. N Engl J Med. doi:10.1056/NEJMoa1010095 [published online ahead of print March 16, 2011]).
SFTS emerged in 2009 in the rural areas of Hubei and Henan provinces of central China. Patients experienced fever, gastrointestinal distress, and a depressed platelet count and 30% died of the infection, although the pathogen remained elusive.
