The 2 previous Resident Physician Forum columns introduced some of the
winners of the American Medical Association's Foundation Leadership Award
Program, which recognizes resident and fellow physicians who have demonstrated
leadership in medical arenas, civic organizations, and community service organizations.
The remaining winners are presented below.
Nova Law, MD, served on the University of Michigan's Council of Medical
Students and Council of Graduate Students. She has also served as chapter
president of Delta Sigma Theta, a service sorority and currently is involved
in several community service projects. Dr Law is a family medicine resident
at the University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio.
Jeffrey C. Lederman, DO, was president of his medical school class for
3 years and founded a student chapter of the American Geriatric Society. He
was a health policy fellow in Washington, DC, for the US Senate Special Committee
on Aging. Currently, he serves on the graduate medical education committee
at Griffin Hospital and was selected to serve on the Organization of Resident
Representatives at the Association of American Medical Colleges. Dr Lederman
is an internal medicine/preventive medicine resident at Yale University School
of Medicine in Norwalk, Conn.
Jesus L. Lizarzaburu, MD, serves as vice president of the Resident Chapter
of the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians, and as a member of the governing
council for his house staff association. Dr Lizarzaburu is a family practice
resident at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.
Shahram Lotfipour, MD, is an editor for Emergency
Physicians Monthly and an officer and board member of the American
Academy of Emergency Medicine. He also is active in his house staff council.
Dr Lotfipour is an emergency medicine resident at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit,
Syed R. Majid, MD, serves as president of his house staff association
and on the graduate medical education committee at his hospital. He is also
a member of the Pastoral Advisory Board of Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr Majid
is an internal medicine resident at the Chicago Medical School in North Chicago,
Melissa A. Merideth, MD, has served on the board of the American Medical
Women's Association and as chair of the Junior Fellows of the Minnesota section
of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has also been
active in many community service projects. Dr Merideth is an obstetrics/gynecology
resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Tara M. Ostrom, MD, is chairman of the chief resident's council and
serves on the medical education committee at her hospital. She initiated a
resident rotation at the St Vincent de Paul Medical Clinic to provide care
for the indigent. Dr Ostrom is a internal medicine resident at St Joseph's
Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.
V. Seenu Reddy, MD, has served as chair of the house staff council and
as a member of several committees at his hospital. He is also a member of
the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Association of Gastrointestinal and
Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr Reddy is a general surgery resident at Vanderbilt
University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn.
Charles P. Samenow, MD, is the executive director of the Adolescent
Substance Abuse Prevention Program, through which he developed a nationally
recognized curriculum on substance abuse prevention for children and adolescents.
He also served as the national project coordinator for the American Medical
Student Association. Dr Samenow is a pediatrics/psychiatry resident at Brown
University in Providence, RI.
