This Visualizing Health Metrics infographic, based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013, provides information on changes in mortality rates for children younger than 5 years, for both sexes, from 1990 to 2013. Children younger than 5 years composed the majority of the total number of deaths of all children and adolescents aged 0 to 19 years in 1990 and 2013. Between 1990 and 2013, the number of deaths for children younger than 5 years decreased for all World Health Organization (WHO) regions, with slowest declines within the Africa region. Over the same time period, the South-East Asia and Africa regions maintained the highest numbers of deaths for children younger than 5 years among all WHO regions. In 2013, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and China had the highest numbers of deaths for children younger than 5 years, while the highest rates of mortality for children younger than 5 years were concentrated in countries in Africa.
