Abstract

Those familiar with previous editions will recognize a major revision and will not be disappointed. All previous 28 chapters are updated through autumn 1982, a few as late as middle 1983, and several are substantively revised to reflect recent conceptual changes in pathogenesis or management (or both). Five new chapters (megacolon and idiopathic constipation in adults, irradiation damage, angiodysplasia and ischemic colitis, and nonspecific colorectal ulceration including the solitary rectal ulcer syndrome) and 150 new illustrations (particularly photographs of colorectal specimens from Morson's collection and drawings of operative procedures including new techniques for stapling and for ileoanal anastomoses, eg, the J-pouch) notably enhance the text. Three chapters remain coauthored, but the remainder are entirely the author's. One thousand new references are added.
