Effects of Dietary Composition on Energy Expenditure During Weight-Loss Maintenance

Abstract Full Text
free access
JAMA. 2012;307(24):2627-2634. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.6607

Reduced energy expenditure following weight loss may contribute to weight gain. Ebbeling and coauthors examined the effect of 3 diets differing widely in macronutrient composition and glycemic load on energy expenditure following weight loss. See the related 7263 by Bray.

Risks of Intracranial Hemorrhage Among Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke Receiving Warfarin and Treated With Intravenous Tissue Plasminogen Activator

Abstract Full Text

JAMA. 2012;307(24):2600-2608. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.6756

To assess risk of intracranial hemorrhage among warfarin-treated patients with acute ischemic stroke treated with intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), Xian and coauthors observed 23 437 such patients (international normalized ratios ≤1.7). In the related 7265, Alberts discusses the need for increased use of tPA in eligible patients with acute ischemic stroke.

In an unblinded study involving 88 children with Hodgkin lymphoma, Metzger et al compared the efficacy of 4 cycles of chemotherapy (VAMP) radiation with 2 cycles of VAMP. In an 6975, Whelan and Goldman discuss evolution of Hodgkin lymphoma treatment for children.

Dr Jakicic and coauthors compared a stepped-care weight loss intervention with a standard behavioral weight loss intervention to determine which one would result in greater weight loss and cost savings. In an accompanying 7263, Dr Bray discusses diet and exercise for weight loss.
