I am a heart transplant cardiologist. When people ask me why I chose this specialty, I joke that it’s because I’m a drama queen. I am honored to watch patients as they are snatched from the jaws of death, transformed by the miracle of a donor heart. People think I’m joking, but I’m not. It’s such a rare and beautiful privilege to see something work that shouldn’t. How is it that you can take someone’s heart out, and put another heart in, and it works? It’s a miracle every time.
