In this issue of JAMA Cardiology, Patel and colleagues1 examine the relative distribution of key internal medicine specialists involved in caring for patients with type 2 diabetes, including cardiologists, endocrinologists, and nephrologists. They note the increasing recognition of the importance of cardiovascular risk reduction in caring for patients with type 2 diabetes and argue that cardiologists, with their relatively greater numbers and contact with high-risk patients compared with other medical specialists, have an important role to play in diabetes care.
