For 8 decades, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the leading cause of death in the US and most other economically developed countries. More than 7 decades ago, hypertension was recognized as the leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke.1 For 5 decades, it has been clear that reducing blood pressure (BP) in patients with hypertension reduces the risk of CVD in individuals and in whole populations.2
