If we dermatologists better understood to what extent patients' lives are affected by their skin disease on an individual basis, we might make better quality clinical decisions and increase patient satisfaction with our care. Pruritus causes severe distress, but our relative impotence in curing itch may have resulted in us failing to give itch more attention. Kini et al1 challenge us to think of itch as being as important as pain. Viewing the huge network of drug strategies and social and support group interventions that are now used in the effective management of pain, the concept of itch as “skin pain ” reveals our lack of similar progress in this area.
