What is the purpose of a book review for a medical journal, and what is the responsibility of a reviewer? I gave particular thought to those questions in 1994 after Clifton White, then editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Dermatopathology, asked me to review a fascicle devoted to the subject of melanocytic tumors of the skin, written by David Elder, MD, and George Murphy, MD, and published by the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC. This is what I wrote then and think now about the matter:
