Dermatology has advanced dramatically in the 20th century. Treatment of skin diseases has changed from being prolonged, bothersome, and often ineffective to being short, pleasant, and often highly effective. Diagnosis of skin diseases has been improved especially by progress in dermatopathology, which has been transformed from an ornamental addendum to clinical observation into a dependable diagnostic method based on precise, repeatable criteria. The understanding of the etiology and pathogenesis has been enhanced by advances in immunopathology and molecular biology, and molecular methods for treatment of hereditary skin diseases are just around the corner.
