Advice to the Dermatology Residency Applicant

Arch Dermatol. 2000;136(1):123-124. doi:

Please understand that this letter is a reflection on my own thoughts regarding what makes an applicant attractive and successful—different chairmen probably have other criteria on which they base their decisions.

I realize that applying for a dermatology residency is an intensely competitive endeavor. Pressure starts early: future applicants must take several dermatology electives at various academic centers where they hopefully get "noticed"; they participate in research projects and submit manuscripts and letters of reference from "name" dermatologists, all to achieve one goal—to have the stellar application that screams "interview me!"
