Examination of hematoxylin-eosin–stained sections demonstrated multiple dilated and irregularly shaped follicular cysts within the dermis. Some of the cysts communicated with the overlying epidermis. Sebaceous ducts linked numerous small, banal-appearing, well-differentiated sebaceous lobules to the cyst walls. Similar lobules were also identified along the dermoepidermal junction. The dermal stroma surrounding the folliculosebaceous units demonstrated lamellar fibrosis and sclerosis of the collagen. Clefts were seen between the folliculosebaceous units and the stroma. Stromal infiltration by lobules of mature adipocytes and focal proliferation of small vessels were identified. Focally, dilated lymphatic vessels were present in the dermis. Patchy lymphocytic dermal inflammation was observed.
