From ancient war paint to contemporary tattoos and piercings, skin has long been a vehicle for individuals to express their personal artistic visions. Many may see their skin as a canvas to be decorated, often conveying group membership, beauty, or marking rites of passage.1 Notably, one contemporary photographer, Ariana Page Russell, has recently even embraced her skin disease as a means of artistic expression.
