Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD (Figure 1), died suddenly on December 20, 2018. It is a testament to his humble nature that such a giant in our field was universally known simply as Steve or Steve Katz. His influence as a physician-scientist in dermatology and beyond cannot be overstated.
In a recent obituary for the British Journal of Dermatology,1 Russell Hall and I outlined the specifics of Steve’s education and career, including his incredibly productive time at the dermatology branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and I will not repeat those details here. In this remembrance, I want to capture Steve’s essence as a researcher, mentor, and person.
