The history of melanocytic skin lesions may serve as a valuable additional diagnostic criterion for the differentiation between melanoma and nevi.1-3 The ability of patients to identify changes of melanocytic skin lesions has been examined by Muhn et al4 using artificial moles in different sizes simulating enlargement, and by Hanrahan et al5 using computer-altered lesions. Both studies demonstrated a limited ability of patients to identify changes of melanocytic skin lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of patients to identify real changes of melanocytic nevi.
