With the institution of air bags as a standard safety feature in all new automobiles, the medical community is encountering new conditions related to air bag deployment. Air bag dermatitis, which is a relatively new entity, has not been widely reported or recognized in the dermatologic literature. It encompasses abrasions, burns, erythema from gases released during deployment, and irritant contact dermatitis. Among dermatologists, early recognition of air bag dermatitis is important in helping to avoid preventable hospitalizations and morbidity.
