Abstract

This pamphlet gives a general description of the disease known as mal del pinto, pinta, caraate or cute. The number of patients with pinto in Mexico amounts to 244,703, according to the 1930 census. The author states that the parasitic nature of the disease is not unanimously admitted today, the possibility of its being a general or systemic infection deserving consideration. It may be a spirochetic disease.

It is noteworthy that between 80 and 90 per cent of cases of pinta give a positive Wassermann reaction. Treatment with mercury, arsphenamine and bismuth seems to be efficacious. Some observers claim that bismuth is specific.
