Many of the chronic lesions of blastomycosis, sporotrichosis, coccidioidal granuloma and the other deep mycoses and in some cases of tinea capitis are so contaminated with pyogenic organisms when the patient consults the physician that isolation of the causative organism in culture is often made more difficult by the abundant growth of these secondary invaders. Staphylococci may crowd so close against the colony of fungi that it is impossible to obtain a pure culture of the fungus for identification. The following simple procedure has been found of considerable value in this situation:
In transplanting the young fungus colony from the neighborhood of staphylococcus colonies to a clean slant of Sabouraud's medium, 1 or 2 cc. of 1 per cent suspension of microcrystalline sulfathiazole is made to cover the surface of the clean medium for approximately a minute and then allowed to run out of the tube.
