Occasionally, printed conference proceedings have been edited to make a readable book of great interest. More often these books are collections of unrelated papers routinely recorded to commemorate a conference, and consequently, are of extremely limited interest to clinicians. Biochemistry of Lipids is of this latter type. Fifty-four articles in English, German, and French are listed in the table of contents. Of these, over 20 are one-paragraph abstracts. These abstracts represent papers by "reluctant authors" as well as those (4?) which have been published in full elsewhere. For some reason, the abstract of "Synthesen ungesättiger Fettaldehyde" is in German, while the complete article in the Journal of Organic Chemistry is in English. The articles printed in full in this book can only be recommended for those interested in the special phase of lipid biochemistry discussed in the article. This book is essentially a memento of the 1958 Vienna Conference.
