The production of artificial miliaria rubra by hypertonic saline compresses was reported in a previous paper.1 In an attempt to distinguish the effects of sodium and chloride ions iontophoresis, various strengths of sodium chloride solution was used; areas of equal size were used for the simultaneous application of anode and cathode, sweating induced thereafter, and biopsies taken. In this way one would expect the effects of sodium ion penetration to take place under the anode and chloride ion under the cathode.
Previous work in the production of miliaria in this way is limited to the original experiment of Schlachta,2 and subsequent series by Shelley et al.3,4 and Dobson and Lobitz.5 In all but a part of one series4 distilled or tap water was used and the experiment conducted with either anode or cathode, never with both simultaneously.
