Abstract

A case of acute acquired afibrinogenemia (the defibrination syndrome) in a 15-month-old female is reported.

Despite extensive hemorrhage and gangrene the child survived after transfusions of whole blood and fibrinogen.

The etiology, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment of the defibrination syndrome is briefly reviewed and described.

The possibility that the cause could have been a snake bite is discussed.
