The retirement of Harvey Blank this month brings to a close a relatively brief, but highly productive, tour of duty as Chief Editor of these Archives. When the late Herb Rattner retired two years ago, Dr. Blank was persuaded, according to his statement then and supported by his action now, to accept tthe post only through persistent academic coercion. The "opportunity to serve" was presented forcefully to him as a duty to his specialty. Harvey had been a member of the editorial board of the Archives for four years and on occasion substituted for Dr. Rattner in official Archives activities. Although not admitted at the time of his appointment (since Dr. Rattner was partial to each and every one of his editorial board members), Dr. Blank was the heir apparent.
The intervening months have witnessed a steady growth in stature and standing of the Archives at home and abroad. More
