Abstract

Chemical analysis of dermis from scleroderma revealed a normal concentration of water and hydroxyproline. This last finding suggest no increase in collagen. Moreover, x-ray diffraction patterns and amino acid analysis of collagen fibers disclosed no abnormalities. My findings support the hypothesis that the main abnormality in scleroderma probably lies in the ground substance.
