This volume is based on the proceedings of a symposium recently held at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry and presents a comprehensive treatment of the histology of oral mucosa, utilizing the latest investigations on the ultrastructure, biochemistry, and physiology of this tissue.

The introductory chapter by C. A. Squier of the London Hospital Medical College is an excellent review of the ultrastructural features of oral epithelium and contains a comprehensive bibliography. M. Iqbal and S. Gerson of the Department of Oral Pathology at the University of Illinoise Medical Center review the biochemical features of oral epithelium and present an extensive bibliography for this relatively new field of investigation into the nature of the various components of oral mucous membrane.
