Thirty-five years ago, Paul Kallós edited the first volume of this series, Progress in Allergy. Each subsequent edition has contained reviews of the important advances in the fields of allergy and immunology. These reviews have been written by knowledgeable experts in the field, and the format of volume 18 has not changed. This edition is a thorough review of certain aspects of immunology such as immunologic tolerance, antigen recognition, antigenic competition, and others. These reviews are not written for the dermatologist, and most dermatologists would find these reviews overly technical, difficult to read, and with no immediate clinical relevance. For those in research working in immunology, allergy, or allied fields, this book is a valuable reference, both for its text and for its outstanding bibliography (1,820 references covering 1972 and earlier).
