This slide collection is a revision of the clinical slide set published by the American Rheumatism Association (ARA) in 1972. As such, it is more up to date and includes newly recognized syndromes, eg, Kawasaki disease, eosinophilic fasciitis, and Lyme arthritis. Also included are 18 new rheumatic manifestations within the 93 additions to the preexisting set of slides. The committee also has replaced slides in an attempt to upgrade the quality of the set.
In general, this collection is extensive and inclusive of both common and rare rheumatic syndromes. The ARA committee screened 2,000 slides to prepare "visual material of the highest medical and technical quality." They state that, in some cases, it was impossible to obtain a faultless slide.
The ophthalmologic, roentgenographic, and pathologic slides are of good quality. Few instances of poor photograph cropping and color control problems occur in these groups, which make up a majority of
