As Goodman also pointed out, Keyes was entirely unaware that Watson had designed an instrument similar to his own. Nevertheless, since the basic design of the instrument was simple, Keyes had been astute enough to write "Doubtless, instruments of this kind had been used before I employed them; I had not ever seen them described, however, and their use is not generally known... I have used them constantly since 1879."1
