To the Editor.—
In the article in the May 1983 Archives entitled "Penile Nodules in Southeast Asian Men" Gilmore et al1 stated "To our knowledge, the practice of implantation of spheres into the penis has not been reported in the North American literature." I wish to add additional information about this and share an amusing commentary on this practice of implantation of penile nodules.In the International Journal of Dermatology, Piamphongsant2 reported that "some Thai people have buried artificial glass balls in the penis, hoping this would stimulate their sexual partner." He also commented on the diagnosis and lack of complications, and so on. When I visited the Institute of Dermatology, Bangkok, in 1978 I asked Dr Piamphongsant about the penile implantations. He told me they had removed one such penile nodule from a patient in the course of treatment for an unrelated condition. The patient returned a
