The 1986 Year Book of Dermatology is now out, in 1987, with mostly 1985 abstracts from the dermatologic literature and a running commentary by Arthur J. Sober, MD, Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, MD, and a group of 13 contributing editors. In an age when the virtually instant retrieval of medical references has become routine, it is the commentary and a chance to share the editors' views on the current state of dermatologic practice that keeps this otherwise anachronistic series interesting.
As might be expected, a major strength of this volume is the section devoted to melanocytic nevi and melanoma. Some other areas invite the reader to learn that his or her views differ sharply from those of the editors.
I experienced little satisfaction, for instance, from the section describing advances in the understanding of urticaria. My own view of that disease is closer to what Robert Benchley once wrote about hangover
