Epidermal Hyperplasia With or Without Atypia in Patients Exposed to Mustard Gas-Reply

Arch Dermatol. 1993;129(2):245. doi:10.1001/archderm.1993.01680230135022
Abstract

In Reply.—  As we mentioned in our article,1 we examined 80 biopsy specimens in different clinical stages. We did not find any atypical keratinocytes, although epidermal hyperplasia was present in two patients whose biopsy specimens were obtained 3 weeks after exposure. The lesions were still ulcerating. The few biopsy specimens that Dowlati et al have examined may be in the late stage. These patients may not have acute problems, as did our patients. In 5 years of follow-up, our 200 patients have not had premalignant or malignant skin lesions.
