Results of ALLHAT: Is This the Final Answer Regarding Initial Antihypertensive Drug Therapy?

TWO RECENT publications1,2 of the findings of the Antihypertensive and Lipid Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart Attack Trial (ALLHAT) have captured the interest of the media and physicians worldwide. The results have important implications for the treatment of hypertension. This double-blind randomized trial originally included more than 40 000 relatively high-risk hypertensive patients with a mean age of 67 years who were followed up over a 5-year period.
