The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is a team-oriented health care delivery model in which the primary care setting serves as a focal point around which necessary services are coordinated and delivered. Evaluations of PCMH model implementation—even those examining the same model—have varied in their estimates of cost savings and quality improvement. Even if there are other good reasons for adopting a PCMH model, including the promotion of primary care access and the facilitation of care coordination, these studies raise important questions regarding how much health systems should invest in these models, and what potential benefits should be anticipated.
