There has been much flux in the health insurance exchange market this year, with more clearly to come. In this issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, Zhu et al1 estimated that 2017 premiums in insurance markets with a single issuer increased 30% compared with 15% in markets having 4 or more issuers.
Although there are areas of the country where the insurance exchanges have not generated as much competition as desirable, overall the Affordable Care Act both fosters competition and provides vital protections for consumers from potential monopoly pricing.
