Evidence-Based Guidelines to Eliminate Repetitive Laboratory Testing?

To the Editor In a Special Communication published in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, Eaton and colleagues¹ claim to offer an evidence-based blueprint for reducing inappropriate laboratory testing among hospitalized patients. This article encourages action by presenting examples of successful projects. We question, however, the conclusion that multimodal strategies containing education, auditing, and feedback, and modifications to the electronic medical record (EMR) are most effective.
