Medical myths/dogmas die hard. Researchers creating a new body of knowledge for prevention and control of the coronary heart disease–cardiovascular disease (CHD-CVD) epidemic had to disprove and displace the following successive myths/dogmas (among others):
All these are now bygone notions, refuted by massive data, but other long-standing myths/dogmas about the CHD-CVD epidemic persist, slowing progress. The report from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study in this issue of the ARCHIVES2 presents valuable findings further documenting that yet another myth/dogma—still bruited about—is contrary to scientific fact:
