Prevalence of Type 1 Gaucher Disease in the United States—Reply

Arch Intern Med. 2008;168(3):327-328. doi:10.1001/archinternmed.2007.92

Weinreb and colleagues correctly point out that many cases of GD type 3 involve seriously ill children with multiple symptoms affecting the hematopoietic, lymphatic, and the neurological organ systems. In our study, we assessed risk of malignant disease among adult (age ≥18 years) male military veterans admitted to VA hospitals with a GD diagnosis.1 Individuals with early-onset severe GD are likely not included in this study because they were almost certainly disqualified from military service in younger years.
