First, to clarify the statement that we included nearly all of the adult patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, the survey included about 85% of such patients hospitalized in our institution during that year. The several patients who were not included were those in whom none of the initial serum samples remained for the analysis of β-hydroxybutyrate.
Second, the 4 nondiabetic patients with ketoacidosis were included merely for interest. The data from those 4 obviously did not significantly skew the overall findings or our interpretation for 60 patients with diabetes.
