Experiment, as shown by Galen, consists of "putting questions to Nature and arranging matters so that Nature may answer them." The question we have asked is: What causes the rapid pulse in hyperthyroidism ? Is it dependent solely on the increased metabolic rate or is there invariably some other factor that produces tachycardia?
This question cannot be answered directly. However, it occurred to us that light might be thrown on the subject by a comparison of the relation between basal metabolism and basal pulse rate in hyperthyroidism with that in leukemia. These are the two afebrile1 morbid states that are conspicuously characterized by an increased rate of heat production.
