The stated aim of this annual series of "Lectures on the Scientific Basis of Medicine," which are given under the auspices of British Postgraduate Medical Federation, is to present "an integrated continuously developing survey of current scientific research and its relation to clinical medicine and surgery." The list of authors is a selective review of active British scientists, investigators, and clinicians. This is the kind of book which is helpful not only for teachers and those in academic medicine and research but also could go a long way toward keeping the physician in practice abreast of the newer developments. This volume maintains the high level of excellence of its predecessors by continuing to supply illuminating comment on regions of medical advance where active research goes on.
