Abstract

I have gained a great deal of pleasure and some instruction from my habit of reading intensively and extensively the writings of somebody who interests me. Then I try to find out what I can about the person himself. Even though I have a very real and active interest in biography, whether it be autobiography or just biography, I am much more likely to be led to look up something of the life of a person from an interest in what he has written than to be led to his works through reading biography. Still it may work in either direction. After I had obtained the four Artemus Ward books, I read them. So I came to know a good deal about Artemus. I even got a book purported to have been written by his wife and published at about the time of his death. I have forgiven the sodality
